polinos If you love Steve Reich, you will undoubtedly like this well constructed unabashedly reichian pastiche.

redcondurango A beautifully inspired work, taking Thelen's fondness for a driving clock like rhythm, beyond guitar into the instruments of the title. Comparisons don't do it justice. Whereas Reich tends to bore with overly intellectual slow harmonic rhythm, this grooves along, embodied with a deeply complex musicality and layers that unfold on repeat listening. it leaves you wanting more. Wonderful use of reeds with distortion too. Look forward to more.

sumbuk This is a very Reich-ian extended work, which I believe was Mr. Thelen's intent. Well composed and well played, which is what I've come to expect from this artist; do not expect this to sound like his compositions for Sonar. Myself, I find his works in this vein most enjoyable.

jim100flower First listen - nice, pleasant.
Second listen - interesting, intricate.
Third listen - awesome.
Fourth listen - amazing!

And if this were streaming, then Stephan would know how many times I am listening.

about

"Keys, Mallets and Reeds" was written in 2022 and is an octet scored for 2 Electric Pianos, 2 Marimbas, 2 Vibraphones, Organ and Clarinet. This album is a computer-generated recording using simulated instruments and computer software. It consists of 13 parts where the first part is in D minor and the key center for each part is one fourth higher than the part before, so that the final part is again in D. It's meant to be a lush, peaceful and soothing piece for late-night listening with dimmed lights, something like the musical equivalent of a warm bath.

Please contact me if you wish to perform this piece with real instruments.
